You'll see some incompatibility issues once you hit 10.9 Mavericks or earlier. I think for the specs on your computer, I'd recommend 10.11 El Capitan for now, then if you get a solid state hard drive, you could easily go to the newest operating system. I would also verify that all of your programs (if you have Microsoft Office) will be compatible with the new OS moving forward.
I have a MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2012) MD223LL/A MBAIR 11.6/1.7/4/64FLASH running OS X 10.7.5. It shipped with Lion. I want to reinstall the OS on the laptop without an internet connection. I have a similar Macbook Pro 13' mid 2012 purchased in 2015. It has 2.5Ghz Dual Core Intel i5 can I upgrade the RAM and HDD to SSD with the following below? Samsung 860 EVO 1TB M.2 SATA SSD/Solid State Drive. LN4806916GB (2x8GB) Corsair MAC Memory DDR3L SO-DIMM PC3-12800 (1600), 204 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 11-11-11-30, 1.35V/1.5V.
Also, I highly recommend running a backup before upgrading, just in case something happens during the upgrade process.
